This is a twist on the classic Mexican cocktail, La Paloma, a combination of tequila and grapefruit. Adding a bit of grenadine gives it a great graduated color effect, and it also adds a little more sweetness to the mix. Serve with a cocktail stirrer to combine all the elements before enjoying.

Makes 1 cocktail
Non-alcoholic variation
To make a non-alcoholic variation,
simply omit the tequila and increase
the sugar, to taste.
Put the grapefruit juice, tequila, salt, and sugar in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Pour into a tall glass (don’t strain, you’ll want the ice).
Drizzle grenadine syrup into the glass, allowing it to sink to the bottom.
Top off gently with chilled club soda, pouring it down the side of the glass or over a spoon so that it doesn’t disturb the juice too much and you get a pretty graduated effect.
Squeeze a lime wedge into the glass, and drop in the empty husk. Stir just before drinking to mix all the layers together.
