Frog Beanie (Free Crochet Pattern)

As an accessory for puddle jumping or simply keeping little noggins warm, this hat is great! The free crochet pattern is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters. Finished Dimensions: Sized for Baby (Toddler) 17 (19–20)" [43 (48–51) cm] circumference. Yarn: Lion Brand Yarns Vanna’s Choice, a 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn packaged in 3.5 oz/100 g balls containing 170 yd/156 m: 1 skein Kelly Green, and small amount white Hook: 5 mm/U.S. H-8 for Baby size; 5.5 mm/U.S. I-9 for Toddler size Other Materials: - two 1/2-inch (13 mm) black buttons - sewing needle and thread - tapestry needle Gauge: 10 hdc = 2" (5 cm) with smaller hook To save time, please check your gauge.

Step 1

Body: With green and appropriate hook for size, ch 4 and join to form ring. Rnd 1: 11 hdc in ring. (11 hdc) Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (22 hdc) Rnd 3: Hdc in each st around. Rnd 4: *Hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, rep from * around. (33 hdc) Rnd 5: Hdc in each st around. Rnd 6: *Hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, rep from * around. (44 hdc) Rnd 7: Hdc in each st around. Rnd 8: *Hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, rep from * around. (55 hdc) Rnd 9: Hdc in each st around. Rnd 10: *Hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next, rep from * around. (66 hdc) Rnds 11–19 (26): Hdc in each st around. Sl st in last st of last rnd. Rnds 20–23 (27–30): Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st in last st of last rnd. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Step 2

Eyes: (make 2) Outer Eye: Rnd 1: With green, ch 2, 10 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. Sl st to join. Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around. Sl st to join. (20 sc) Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc around. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Inner Eye: (make 2) With white, rep Rnds 1 and 2 of Outer Eye. Fasten off and weave in ends. Place white Inner Eye on top of the green Outer Eye. Sew in place. Place 1 black button on top of the white circle and sew in place. Sew assembled Eye to Hat.

Step 3

Mouth: With black yarn, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st with first sc to join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Do this twice, and then sew pieces in place, referring to photo for placement. One of the “long tails” makes the “smile.”
