- 3/4" (2cm) tab of hook-and-loop tape
- Basic sewing kit
- Chopstick or similar turning tool
Estimated time: 20–40 minutes
Makes: One 2" x 4" (5 x 10cm) MP3 player holder
Cut your fabric for the MP3 Player Holder Pieces as follows
Holder back and front (Cut 2)
Light- to medium-weight woven
3 1/4" x 5 1/4"(8 x 13.5cm)
5/8" (1.5cm) seam allowance
Pocket (Cut 1)
Light- to medium-weight woven
3 1/4" x 7 1/4"(8 x 18.5cm)
5/8" (1.5cm) seam allowance
Tab (Cut 1)
Light- to medium-weight woven
3 1/4" x 4 3/4"(8 x 12cm)
5/8" (1.5cm) seam allowance
Sew the tab. Fold the tab piece in half lengthwise with right sides together and sew along the open long side and one short side on the bottom. The top should be left free for turning right side out. Clip the seam allowances, turn the tab right side out with a chopstick, and iron the piece flat.
Apply the hook-and-loop tape. Take a piece of hook-and-loop tape and center the hooked side on the bottom sewn end of the tab. Sew it in place following the hook-and-loop tape feature (below) for extra help. Apply the loop side 3" (7.5cm) down from the top of the holder back on the right side, centering it horizontally.
Applying hook-and-loop tape: As you can feel, there is a hook side (scratchy side) and a loop side (fluffy side) to hook-and-loop tape, and it’s good to be aware of that when placing your pieces. In any project, there will usually be a side that’s facing upward and another facing downward. Try to use the fluffy side on the part that’s facing upward to avoid undue scratches. The part facing downward should have the scratchy side so it will be less likely to rub against your skin or hurt someone.
Sew the pocket to the back. Fold the pocket in half widthwise with wrong sides together, lining up the raw edges. Line the open edge of the folded pocket against the bottom edge of the holder back on the right side of the fabric. Layer the holder front on top so the right sides of the two holder pieces are facing. Sew around every edge except the top. Trim the seam allowances, turn the holder right side out, and press. Flip the pocket so that the hook-and-loop tape is on the opposite side.
Attach the tab. Tuck the seam allowances into the top of the holder and press. With the hook-and-loop pieces both facing up, slip the tab into the top and sew across the top edge, close to the folds.
