It was only last year that Hostess announced they were going out of business and fans of the Twinkie were worried about the fate of their favorite little snack cake. But now Hostess has revived themselves and the Twinkie is back in business! To celebrate the revival of the snack cake of our childhoods, we've rounded up six recipes that remind of us of our Twinkie love!
Twinkie Cake Pops
Cake pops are a fun treat to make with your kids and this recipe adds that delicious Twinkie taste. All you’ll need are some Twinkies (naturally), candy melts, sticks and any decorations you want to use. Mix up about six Twinkies and form the mixture into balls, then freeze for ten minutes. Melt your candy melts and coat your Twinkie balls in the candy melts. When you’re done, you’ll have colorful Twinkie pops for a party, or just for a weekend snack!
Chocolate Twinkies with Magic Shell
Chocolate makes everything better! This recipe is actually for gluten-free chocolate banana Twinkies. The cake recipe is pretty straightforward, and it calls for you to add some mashed banana and coconut oil for flavoring. The “magic shell” topping is made from melted chocolate chips and coconut oil. When poured on top of your chocolate banana Twinkies, this mixture will harden and create that shell-like effect for a slight crunch when you bite into your tasty treat.
Mummy Twinkie Pops
Halloween is right around the corner and these mummy Twinkie pops are a great way to combine the holiday spirit with a love of Twinkies. The best part about this recipe is that there’s no baking involved! So this recipe might come in handy if you need a quick treat for a Halloween party. Simply push a cookie stick into a Twinkie and coat it in melted white candy melts. Once the Twinkie is coated, drizzle the candy melts over it to create a striped effect, as though it’s the mummy’s wrappings. Then add some candy eyes to finish it off!
Twinkie Bumblebee Treats
Because of their distinctive shape, Twinkies can be made into a myriad of different things with a bit of decoration. This recipe makes the Twinkie into a friendly bumblebee! Instead of giving your kids a Twinkie on its own for an after-school treat, they might like this cutely decorated snack instead. In addition to Twinkies, you’ll need white modeling chocolate, black food coloring and frosting. Color the modeling chocolate with the black food coloring to form the stripes of the bee and then use the leftover white for its wings.
Back to School Bus Twinkies
Yet another thing that Twinkies can become is a school bus! And with school beginning again, these are an adorable option for after-school snacks or a lunchtime treat to pack for your kids. All you’ll need is one Twinkie per school bus snack and decorations such as frosting, M&Ms and sprinkles. Cut a wedge out of the top right side of the Twinkie, then one more small strip, and replace the wedge to create the front of the bus and its windshield. Then it’s time to decorate — it’s as simple as that!
Twinkie Sushi
This is a very unique and creative snack to make with just a box of regular old Twinkies. All you need to do is slice a Twinkie into one-inch pieces. Then slice fruit rollups into strips that are long enough to wrap around your Twinkie slices, just as seaweed would wrap around a piece of sushi. Add dried fruit or a gummy candy in the middle, stuck right into the cream filling of the Twinkie. Place these Twinkie sushi pieces in a Bento box or on a platter and present to your guests, family or friends!
