Braiding your own hair can be a great way to add style and personality to an everyday look. It can also be a low hassle 'do that doesn't need to be done by hair stylists. Here we’ll discuss four easy techniques. Whether you're looking for a simple style for work or school or want to try something more elaborate for a special occasion, read on for several braiding options!
Three Strand Braid
The three-strand braid is probably the most well-known approach, and it's also one of the easiest to do on your own hair.
To start, gather all of your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Make sure that your hair is not too slippery, since this can make braiding more difficult. You can either lightly mist your hair with water, or apply a small amount of styling product to help grip the strands.
Evenly dividing your ponytail into three sections. Take the right section and cross it over the middle section. Next, take the left section and cross it over the new middle section. Continue crossing the sections over one another until you reach the ends of your hair. Secure the braid with a clear elastic or hair tie, and you're done! If you want, you can also lightly tug on the braid to make it appear fuller.
Dutch Braid
A Dutch braid, also called an inside-out braid, is similar to a three-strand braid but with a little bit of extra texture.
Start by dividing your hair down the middle into two even sections. Then cordon off a small section in the front (just a few inches from your hairline back) and divide that area into three parts: right, middle and left. Then, take the right section and cross it over the middle section. Take the left section and cross it over the new middle section.
As you’re weaving these sections together, pull in a little extra hair from above and below the main strands as you go.
Now take the next strand of hair from the right side and add it to the right section. Cross this section over the middle, and then take the next strand of hair from the left side and add it to the left section. Cross this section over the new middle section. Continue braiding in this manner, adding new pieces of hair as you go and crossing them over the middle until you reach the back side of your hair. Then repeat the process on the other side. Secure the braid with a clear elastic or hair tie, and you're done!
Fishtail Braid
To start the fishtail braid, gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Make sure that your hair is not too slippery. Divide your ponytail into two even sections. Then, pick a small piece of hair from the outside of the right section and cross it over to the left section.
Take a small piece of hair from the outside of the left section and cross it over to the right section.
Continue crossing small pieces of hair from one side to the other until you reach the ends of your hair. Secure the braid with a clear elastic or hair tie, and you're done!
Waterfall Braid
A waterfall braid is a pretty and elegant style that looks more complicated than it actually is. To start, gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck.
Divide your ponytail into three even sections. Then, take the middle section and cross it over the right section. Take the left section and cross it over the new middle section. Now, take a small piece of hair from the outside of the right section and add it to the middle section. Take the middle section and cross it over the left section. Now, take the left section and drop it down, allowing the new piece of hair that you just added to hang loose.
Grab the middle section and cross it over the right section. Take the right section and cross it over the new middle section.
Grab a new piece of hair from the outside of the left section and add it to the middle section.
Cross the middle section over the right section, and then take the right section and drop it down, allowing the new piece of hair that you just added to hang loose. Continue braiding in this manner, adding new pieces of hair and dropping sections down as you go, until you reach the ends of your hair.
Don’t forget: You can also add embellishments such as beads or flowers to personalize your braids. Have fun!
