What do you like best in a crochet sandwich? Lettuce and tomato? Maybe a slice or two of crisp bacon for a BLT? Or a slice of cheese? Or any combination of the above? We’ve included all these — with slices of wholewheat bread to assemble your fillings on. We’ve left our sandwiches open, Scandinavian style, so that you get a proper look at all the ingredients.

Ingredients
• U.S. size E crochet hook
• Worsted-weight yarn in the suggested colors (each pattern calls for only a small amount of each color)
• Tapestry needle (for weaving in yarn ends and sewing up seams)
• Scissors
• Some pieces need a little stuffing—unless a different stuffing is specifically listed, choose a lightweight custom toy stuffing

Step 1

Bread slice:

(make 3 pieces for each bread slice)

We’ve picked slices of wholewheat bread. If you prefer white, however, simply pick a cream rather than a beige yarn. If you want a multiseed slice, you could try a flecked yarn.

You also will need
• Small quantities of worstedweight yarn in beige and brown

row 1 using beige yarn, ch 20, sc 19 {19 sc sts}
rows 2–15 ch 1, turn, sc 19 {19 sc sts}
row 16 ch 1, turn, sc 1, skip 1, sc 15, skip 1, sc 1 {17 sc sts}
row 17 ch 1, turn, sc 1, skip 1, sc 13, skip 1, sc 1 {15 sc sts}
row 18 ch 1, turn, inc in next st, sc 13, inc in next st {17 sc sts}
row 19 ch 1, turn, inc in next st, sc 15, inc in next st {19 sc sts}
row 20 ch 1, turn, sc 19 {19 sc sts}
row 21 turn, sc 1, dc 1, tr 6, hdc 1, sc 1, hdc 1, tr 6, dc 1, sc 1, clean
fasten off {18 sc sts}

Using brown yarn, sc around edges of each piece, clean fasten off. {78 sc sts}

Step 2

To make up the bread slice:

Make two more pieces identical to the first one. Stack the three pieces together, aligning the edges and making sure that the top and base pieces are facing right sides out.

Using brown yarn, sl st all round the edge through all three layers. When you’ve worked around the bread slice, weave in the yarn end.

Step 3

Tomato slice:

(make 2 pieces for each slice)
Almost any sandwich benefits from a slice or two of tomato.

You also will need
• Small quantities of worstedweight yarn in bright red and cream

rnd 1 using bright red yarn, sc 8 in magic ring, sl st to close round {8 sc sts}
rnd 2 ch 1, sc 1 in same space as prev. sl st, [switch to cream yarn, inc in next st, switch to red, inc in next st] 3 times, switch to cream yarn, inc in next st, switch to red, sl st close round {15 sc sts}
rnd 3 ch 1, sc 1 in same space as prev. sl st, sc 1, [inc in next st, sc 1] all round, sl st to close round {23 sc sts}
rnd 4 ch 1, sc 1 in same space as prev. sl st, sc 2, [inc in next st, sc 2] all round, clean fasten off {31}

Step 4

To complete the tomato slice:

When you have worked two identical pieces, thread a tapestry needle with cream yarn and work the stitch detail shown in the photograph. Weave in the ends on the wrong side. Stack the pieces together, right sides facing out. Using red yarn, sl st all round the edges through both layers, sandwiching them together.

Step 5

Lettuce leaf:

Add some lettuce to balance the high-protein sandwich options.
You also will need
• Small quantities of worstedweight yarn in bright green and cream

Using cream yarn, ch 15, tr 1 in 3rd loop from hook, tr 2, dc 3, hdc 2, sc 5, clean fasten off.
Using green yarn, with right side facing join before 2nd dc and working toward the narrow end, ch 1, dc 2 in next st, tr 2, dtr 2, trtr 2, trtr 3 in next st, trtr 4 in next st, trtr 3 in next st, trtr 2, dtr 2, tr 2, dc 2 in 1, ch 1, sl st 12 [sc 1, ch 1, sc 1 in same place as last sc, ch 1] 26 times, sl st, fasten off.

To complete the lettuce leaf:
Simply weave in any loose yarn ends.

Step 6

Bacon slice:

You’ll want two or three of these, but they’re very easy to make.

You also will need
• Small quantities of worstedweight yarn in burgundy and white

row 1 using burgundy yarn, ch 31, [sc 3, inc in next st, sc 3, dec over 2 sts ] 3 times, sc 3 {30 sc sts}
row 2 ch 1, turn, [sc 3, dec over 2 sts, sc 3, inc in next st] 3 times, sc 3 {30 sc sts}
row 3 ch 1, turn, [sc 3, inc in next st, sc 3, dec over 2 sts] 3 times, sc 3 {30 sc sts}
row 4 ch 1, turn, [sc 3, dec over 2 sts, sc 3, inc in next st] 3 times, sc 3, fasten off {30 sc sts}

Step 7

To complete the bacon slice:

Thread a tapestry needle with white yarn and stitch two lines of running stitch along the length of the slice, finishing off and stitching the ends into the crochet

Step 8

Cheese slice:

(pattern 1)
We’ve supplied two different cheese patterns for you to try.

You also will need
• A small quantity of worstedweight yarn in cream
• Sewing needle and tan thread
• Small scrap of tan felt

row 1 using cream yarn, ch 16, sc 15 {15 sc sts}
rows 2–15 ch 1, turn, sc 15 {15 sc sts}, fasten off

To make up the cheese Slice 1:

Weave in any loose ends of yarn. Cut four circles of tan felt, two about an inch, and two about half-an-inch in diameter. Thread the needle with tan thread and neatly sew the circles onto the finished cheese slice.

Step 9

Cheese slice:

(pattern 2)
This second version of the cheese slice is made from four pieces.

You also will need
• A small quantity of worstedweight yarn in cream

Make 1
rnd 1 using cream yarn, sc 16 in magic ring and do not pull ring very tight when done. The hole in the center should be about 1⁄2 in (1.25 cm) across, sl st to close round {16 sc sts}
rnd 2 ch 1, sc 1 in same space as prev. sl st, sc 3, [inc in next st, sc 3] 3 times, clean fasten off {19 sc sts}

Make 2
rnd 1 using cream yarn, sc 12 in magic ring and do not pull ring very tight when done. The hole in the center should be about 1⁄4 in (0.75 cm) across, continue all round in a spiral {12 sc sts}
rnd 2 sc 1, dc 4 in next st, dc 1, [dc 1, tr 2, dc 1] in next st, dc 1, [dc 1, hdc 1, sc 1] in next st, sl st 1, clean fasten off {14 sc sts}

Make 1
rnd 1 using cream yarn, sc 20 in magic ring and do not pull ring very tight when done. The hole in the center should be about 3⁄4 in (2 cm) across, clean fasten off {20 sc sts}

Step 10

To make up the cheese slice 2:

Using a tapestry needle threaded with matching yarn, whipstitch the four pieces just made together into a 2 x 2 grid. Each piece connects to another with a 5-stitch-long seam. See the photograph of the finished piece for placement.

Join again in any corner of the 2 x 2 grid just made. Ch 2, sc 1 in same space as the join, sc 4, dc 2, sc 4, [[sc 1, hdc 1] in next st, [hdc 1, sc 1] in next st, sc 4, dc 2, sc 4] 3 times, [sc 1, hdc 1] in next st 1, clean fasten off {55 sc sts}.

Weave in any loose yarn ends.
